Are you interested in knowing more about what Web 3.0 is? I realize I’m a bit late to the game, but I stumbled across a reel on AfroTech’s Instagram page a few weeks ago and my curiosity got the best of me. After watching a few YouTube videos and browsing the web, I’ve come to the conclusion that web3 is just the next evolution of the internet. Don’t @ me if I’m wrong; it’s only been a few weeks, and I’m sure there’s so much more to learn. Web 1.0 was all about static pages without much interaction between users. Web 2.0 introduced the world of social media allowing users to collaborate on a single interface.

There are implications that web 3.0 consist of 3 main components:

1. Artificial intelligence – (AI) is demonstrated in machines that contain human-like intelligence. Think RAX remote agent that was uploaded in Deep Space One in the late 1990s or modern-day robots like Siri and Alexa.

2. Internet of Things – (IoT) is a 20+-year-old concept that describes a network of connections. The constant exchange of data and information through devices we use every day. Think about the interworking of auto sensors, QR codes, and Fitbits. And how a physical object’s data is collected, analyzed, and processed.

3. Blockchain technology – It’s essentially an information structure that stores data across a network of computers. Not only is data decentralized, but it’s also distributed, making it virtually impossible to corrupt or edit records.

I want to focus a bit on blockchain technology because it’s gaining so much hype. It became popular in 2008 with the rise of Bitcoin, where individuals were able to exchange this digital currency while eliminating the central banking system. Each transaction is traced and recorded through a blockchain.

The inherently secure nature of blockchain technology makes it extremely trustworthy, attractive and can be utilized in literally every industry.

The healthcare industry and financial institutions come to mind immediately when I think of employment opportunities. Mainly because the constant improvement of security and accuracy are likely among the top priorities. Having a basic knowledge of how blockchain technology works paired with your core professional competencies could present new opportunities. A few roles posted on LinkedIn are Blockchain Developer, Blockchain Project Manager, and Blockchain UX Designer to name a few.

Below is a video that gives a simple explanation of how it all works.
